International Bank Account Number (IBAN)

What is IBAN (International Bank Account Number)?

IBAN is the international bank account number which will replace the existing client accounts at the banks. It is coded in compliance with a certain standard to provide fast and unerring money transfer transactions.

In accordance with the standard relating to IBAN, a bank client account number in standard length and structure has to be formed countrywide. The length of IBAN figure in each country is different but shall not exceed 34 characters. In addition to EU countries, many others utilize IBAN currently.
In countries which have started to execute IBAN system, account holders are assigned with an IBAN for each and every bank account number they have. IBAN's form and standard vary from one country to another and it has a 2 digit "verification/control figure" which is obtained with a special ciphering algorithm. When a client, who wishes to transfer money to another country or bank, provides his IBAN to the remitting bank and IBAN of recipient's account is checked by the remitting bank before money is transferred to the receiving bank. If IBAN is found to be incorrect, transfer is not made and false transaction is prevented.

Relevant statement by Central Bank of Turkey has been published on the Official Journal dated 10.10.2008, numbered 27020.

What are the Facilities of IBAN for Account Holders?

Length and format of account numbers are different in each country and bank. As bank account numbers do not have a certain standard, clients who would like to transfer money to another country or bank can never be sure about the accuracy of the account number advised by the recipient.

When it comes to purchasing or service procurement, account numbers in various formats on invoices received from many different suppliers cause importing companies/persons make mistakes when transferring money. Consequently, transfers made through incorrect account numbers cannot be finalized and the error is realized only after the transfer is received by the receiving bank. Many other transactions are needed for the correction of false operation which extend the length of time and increase the cost.

The purpose of IBAN is to prevent errors and delays arisen at money transfers made through banks and other financial institutions in European countries. By IBAN, money is transferred from the sender's account to the recipient's account faster and flawlessly. In this way, delays arising from false transactions are prevented.
